Galileo Galilei And The Modern Experimental Method

Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy on February 15, 1564. â€Å"His father, Vincenzio Galilei, was a musician whose originality and polemic talents fomented a revolution uniting practice and theory in music much as Galileo was to unite them in science.†I Galileo is credited with establishing the modern experimental method in a time when most progress made by scientists and thinkers was based on hypotheses alone. He began the practice of testing scientific theories by preforming experiments and observing the results. Receiving his early education at a monastery near Florence, in 1581 Galileo entered the University of Pisa to study medicine, later devoting himself to mathematics. From 1602 to 1609 Galileo continued to study speeds of falling objects, including pendulums. He studied these objects as they moved in arcs and along inclines and developed the law of uniform acceleration, which would later help Isaac Newton derive the law of gravity.VIII Overtime, Galileo would contribute many works and discoveries to the field of science, and is often referred to as the â€Å"Father of Modern Science† because of this. In 1593, Galileo invented an early thermometer, which became one of the first instruments for measuring used in science. How Music Has An Effect On The Human Brain - 1561 Words

Donald A. Hodges and Robin W. Wilkins, two professors of music education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro have done research and wrote about their findings as it relates to how and why music has an effect on the human brain, in an article entitled How and Why Does Music Move Us?: Answers from Psychology and Neuroscience. In the article they go over the technique used to examine the brain’s interconnectivity as people listen to music. This technique is called Network Science. Neuroscientists often call it ‘the resting state.’ We think that people move in and out of the resting state throughout the day. For example, maybe one minute your mind is adrift and you’re reflecting on your life and feeling overwhelmingly grateful or perhaps the opposite, a sense of profound loss. While your mind is wandering, you may suddenly in the next minute have to redirect your attention to an external task. The DMN emerges in infancy and continues to develop throughout the life span. His ideas will be extracted from various online sources. The leadership style will then be put into the theories of leadership. A personal reflection will help the reads to understand the changes that could be done in Penn if there is another person in place of Penn as the leader. The report wills start with the description of Penn. His activities and ideas will throw light on the actions he has taken in the past and the way he transitioned in the present. The leadership theories will be discussed next. The actions taken by Penn will be compared with the leadership theories and models. It will be helpful in understating the style that Penn followed in the organization. Finally, the personal reflection will talk about other ways of handling the employees and some other aspects of leadership styles that might have affected the employees in a better and different manner. Telstra provide over 7.0 million voice services, 17.2 million mobile services and 3.4 million retail fixed broadband services in Australia. Andy Penn worked as the group executive international and chief financial officer of Telstra before becoming the chief executive officer on 1st may 2015. The career span of Andy Penn is for 30 years. Andrew worked with AXA before joining Telstra. It was due to the leadership of Andrew Penn that AXA was able to build strong platform in Asia. The platform was sold to the parent company in the year 2011 for $10.4 billion. Penn has the fellowship of the chartered association of Certified Accountants. He holds a MBA degree from Kingston University, London, he graduated from Harvard business school in the advanced management program. Andrew Penn not only thought about business but also looked after the corporate social responsibility of an organization and contributed in a number of charitable activities. He is serving the position of the life governor and foundation board member in the organization very Special Kids. In addition to his engagement with Very Special Kids, he is serving as the member of the bug issue advisory, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Advisory Council and he is also an Amy Gillet Foundation Ambassador. In addition to his CSR activities, Andrew Penn is interested with visual arts as well. He is always supportive towards the programmers of Telstra with national gallery of museum, the national aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders are award and the museum of contemporary art (telstra.com.au 2016). Penn mainly believes in the growth of the organization where he is serving (Ramli 2015). He believes that if they are able to win the trust of the customers, then they will be able to develop a long-term relationship with the customers. Once the customers will be satisfied with the business of the company, they will be loyal to the company and the company will be able grow with the help of the loyalty of the customers (Garca-Morales, Jimnez-Barrionuevo and Gutirrez-Gutirrez 2012). He believed in team building and has threatened the competitors that they are ready to sacrifice the profit of the company to build a strong customer base. Penn is ready to give short term sacrifices to gain long term results. As Telstra is having a number of competitors from the market, he is aiming at developing a strong mobile network that would help them to gain more customers. It might result in losing out to the competitors in the short run. As he wants to develop a strong mobile network, hence the company has to wait for long until they are able to develop a proper network that would be helpful the customers with a better experience of the mobile than other brands that are currently operating in the market. Andrew Penn loves taking challenges. He hailed from a financial background when he joined at Telstra. In a meeting he said that he had the choice to continue in the financial market in his career but he chose to switch to Telstra, which is into telecommunications (UNSW Australia Business School 2016). Thus, it can be seen that not only the employees to take up challenges but he takes up challenges and tries to prove him in tough situations. He takes the inspiration from many of other leaders and never steps back from appreciating others. He talks about Elon Musk and mentioned that the person is younger than him, yet he achieved much more than him. He openly said that he takes inspiration form a person who is younger than him, yet achieved more than him. The idea that Andrew Penn likes to think about the society and it is clearly visible when he says that the world has advanced in terms of technology, however, one entity should not leave behind another entity for moving ahead. He talks about the fact that the adoption of technology helps an organization to move ahead of another. The one who adopts the technology in a better manner goes ahead and functions well. On the other hand, there are people who are unable to keep track of the technology, which may not be intentional but may be for the lack for the resources. However, it is the duty of the people who are able to avail the technology to help the people who are not avail the same (Choudhary, Akhtar and Zaheer 2013). Telstra suffered a major loss before David Thodey took over as the chief executive. The flagship of David Thodey is now being carried out by Penn. Penn is open to the innovations. From the fixed line to the mobile services, he understands the fact that the industry is constantly changing and prepares him as well as the employees with the changing environment of the industry Evaluation of the leader Andrew Penn operates the situational leadership when it came to managing the employees and handling the situation. He understood that the market for the mobile network is not right as there are a number of competitors present in the market (Aydin, Sarier and Uysal 2013). Hence, he thought to wait for the moment and suffer loss rather than jumping into the competition. He believes that they need to develop themselves so that when they come into the market, they will be the best in the market. The four main division of the situational eldership are: Delegating Supporting Selling Directing It starts when the leader just comes in the group and the members of the group have least idea about the leadership style and qualities of the leader (Lin et al. 2015). The leader is neither directive nor supportive. This phase is called the delegating stage. In the second stage, the leader and the members start knowing each other. The leader supports the members of the group and the leader is low on direction (Choudhary, Akhtar and Zaheer 2013). The second stage is called the coaching stage. The third stage is the coaching stage where the leader is highly supportive as well as highly directional. The individual understands the problems with the employee as well as the market and guides the employees how to go about in the market (Garca-Morales, Jimnez-Barrionuevo and Gutirrez-Gutirrez 2012). The final stage is the directing stage where the leader is highly directional but not so supportive. The employees by the fourth stage have a clear idea about the work and might not need the sup port. Penn believed that the competition for the mobile network in the market is tough and they need to prepare themselves to get hold of the market. Thus, he found the situational leadership style the best suited style that will help him to tackle the employees and the business (Moriano et al. 2014). Traits of transformational leadership in Andrew Penn The traits of transformational leader are also present in Andrew Penn. He not only makes the employee to take up works of challenges but himself gets involved in the challenges (Shahhosseini, Silong and Ismaill 2013). He did not continue in the same field for long and joined a completely new industry mainly to try out a different field. He took up the challenges to try his career in a new field, which is the biggest trait of a transformational leader (Rajbhandari et al. 2014). A transformational leader always talks about changes for the betterment (Giltinane 2013). A transformational leader never wants anything to become stagnant and find out way to make things interesting for self and for other who are working with the leader (McCleskey 2014). He breaks away from the traditional ways of working and looks for new ways to do business. Andrew Penn has all these qualities and hence he can be rightly called a transformational leader. Some other qualities of transformational leader is also present in Andrew Penn. Andrew Penn talked about the fact that the entity who is moving ahead of the others should also take into consideration the entities that are not able to keep a pace. A transformational leader not only thinks about the progress of the self but also thinks about the progress of other (Rabarison, Ingram and Holsinger Jr 2013). Similarly, Penn not only talks about the self but also about other entities that might not be able to get the help of the technology. A transformational leader trains the co-employees so that the co-employees are able to work in a better manner and able to work in better positions (Pashiardis 2014). Andrew also told in a meeting that the entities that are able to use the technology well should think about those entities that are not able to get hold of that and should never leave the other entities behind Personal reflection According to me, the steps taken by Andrew Penn are commendable but there are certain loopholes in the steps taken by peen. It is good that Penn thought about the longer relationships and was ready to sacrifice the short-term profit but he should also think about the short term profit. The employees should feel motivated by achieving the short-term goals, which will help them to get motivation for achieving the long-term goals (Gregoire and Arendt 2014). To keep the employees motivated about their work, it is the duty of a leader and hence, being the leader of an organization, he should think about the ways to keep the employees motivates in their work (Chemers 2014). If I would have in the place of Penn, I would have worked for the short-term goals as well as long-term goals. The employees need to feel motivated that they are able to achieve the shorter goals, only then they will be able to concentrate on the long-term goals(Neumann and Neumann 2013). It could given more preference on the long-term goals but should have kept short-term goals to make the employees motivated for the future. Along with the transformational leadership, Penn also followed the situational leadership. The situational leadership is mainly about guiding the employees towards proper management of the task. At times, the employees become over-dependent on the leader when every tight situation arrives in the organization (Du et al. 2013). The employees turn to the leader for every support and helped. If I was the leader, I would have encouraged the employees to solve the issues themselves rather than taking all the decisions myself. In this way, the employees would have known the ways to solve their problems. Once the employees become over-dependent on the leader, it harms the company in the long run (Aydin, Sarier and Uysal 2013). The first three stage of situational leadership helps the members as the leader is guiding them and helping them in their work. In the final stage, the employees do not get any support (Wang et al. 2013). This might hamper the business as the employees will get used to the directions and support that have been provided by the leader. If at the final stage, suddenly the employees have to work by themselves, they might not be able to tackle the situations (Lin et al. 2015). As a result, I would have guided the employees but let the employees take the decision. If they were not able to take the decision properly, I would have guided them but not entirely and helped them to develop their confidence in work. Conclusion After going through the activities and the steps taken by Andrew Penn, it can be concluded that Penn follows a situational and transformational leadership. Penn mainly thought about the long-term goals in the organization rather than the short-term goals. He guided the employees win such manner so that they are able to handle the immense pressure that will come from the competitors. Penn believes that it is the duty of the stronger entity to support the weaker entity. He feels that none of the entity should be left behind if something is not accessible by any entity. Penn likes to challenges and hence he shifted to Telstra from an entirely different field to Telstra. It has been found that the traits of situational and transformational leadership. He guides the employees of the organization to deal with the competition in the external market, which is the trait of the situational leadership. On the other hand, he only thinks about the development of himself but also about other membe rs, which is a trait of transformational leadership. However, my personal reflection regarding Andrew Penn is quite commendable. He handles the employees well and takes intelligent decisions for organization. However, I felt that guiding the employees in every step will result in over-dependency of the employees on the leader. They might not be allowed to take decision in the final stage and hence, if I would be in the place of Penn, I would have asked the employees to take decisions by themselves. The final decision might not be of the employees but unless they will be confident in their work, they would not b able to develop properly. In addition to this, I would have kept short-term and long-term goals. the employees would have them motivated by achieving the short-term goals and would be more prepared for the long-term goals. As the act of criminality is a global phenomenon, there must therefore be some explanation as to why this is; some schools of thought strive to explicate this by means of genetics, whilst others take a more socially influenced approach. Although at the time, the micro-criminological theories of Lombroso and Sheldon may have appeared credible, modern research has attempted to refute such notions. In an epidemiological context, the act of crime is seen by some as a positive contribution to society, as noted by Durkheim (Kirby et al, 2000), although too much will lead to social instability, or anomie. In contrariety to Durkheim's beliefs, a Marxist perspective would consider the mere notion of capitalism as criminal; thus deeming the vast majority of global society to be in a constant state of anomie. However, there is still much dispute as to whether people are born, or made into criminals. This essay will discuss the arguments within this debate. To be ‘born’ criminal ind icates a genetic heredity whereas if one is ‘made’; the environmental influences are the significant factor in creation of criminal behaviour. Despite much controversy surrounding the notion of inherited criminal tendencies, there is much evidence to support such theories. Although Lombroso may have employed his theoretic atavisms in an attempt to provide a biologically deterministic method of reducing or preventing crime, they have ultimately lead to an abandonment of gravitas concerning such a notion. However, as myopic as Lombroso's theories of criminality being a hereditary trait appears (Mannheim, 1965) research has shown shared physical characteristics to be commonplace in explicating the argument of genetic criminal behaviour. Although Lombroso presented... ...e fact it does not claim people will be born destined to commit criminal offences, but rather suggests an inherent predisposition towards such behaviours, which can be influenced by societal factors. Public Health During the Industrial Revolution One important impact of the industrial revolution (such as the use of coal, iron, and steam) was rapid urbanization, as new and expanding industry caused villages and towns to swell, sometimes into vast cities. The Port of Liverpool, for example, rose from a population of a couple of thousand to many tens of thousands in the space of a century. As a result, these towns became hotbeds of disease and depredation, prompting a debate in Britain about public health. Its important to remember that science wasnt as advanced as today, so people didnt know exactly what was going wrong, and the speed of changes was pushing government and charities structures in new and strange ways. But there was always a group of people who looked at the new stresses on the new urban workers and were willing to campaign to solve them. The Problems of Town Life in the Nineteenth Century Towns tended to be segregated by class, and working-class neighborhoods where the everyday laborer lived had the worst conditions. As the governing classes lived in different areas they never saw these conditions, and protests from the workers were ignored. Housing was generally bad and made worse by the numbers of people constantly arriving in cities. The most common housing pattern was high-density back-to-back structures which were poor, damp, badly ventilated with few kitchens and many sharing a single tap and privy. Print Collector/Getty Images / Getty Images There was also inadequate drainage and sewerage, and what sewers there were tended to be square, stuck in the corners, and built of porous brick. Waste was frequently left in the streets and most people shared privies which emptied into cesspits. What open spaces there were also tended to be filled with rubbish, and the air and water were polluted by factories and slaughterhouses. The satirical cartoonists of the day didnt have to imagine a hell to illustrate in these cramped, poorly designed cities. Consequently, there was much illness, and in 1832 one doctor said only 10% of Leeds was actually in full health. In fact, despite technological developments, the death rate rose, and infant mortality was very high. There was also a range of common diseases: tuberculosis, typhus, and after 1831, cholera. The terrible working environments created new occupational hazards, such as lung disease and bone deformities. The 1842 report by the British social reformer Edwin Chadwick called Report on the Sanitary Condition of the Labouring  Population of Great Britain showed that the life expectancy of an urban dweller was less than that of a rural one, and this was also affected by class. Why Public Health Was Slow to Be Dealt With Before 1835, town administration was weak, poor and too impotent to meet the demands of new urban life. There were few representative elections to produce forums for people who were worse off to speak, and there was little power in the hands of town planners, even after such a job was created by necessity. Revenues tended to be spent on large, new civic buildings. Some regions had chartered boroughs with rights, and others found themselves governed by a lord of the manor, but all these arrangements were too out-of-date to deal with the speed of urbanization. Scientific ignorance also played a role, as people simply didn’t know what caused the diseases that afflicted them. There was self-interest too, as builders wanted profits, not better quality housing, and the government-held a deep prejudice about the poors worthiness of efforts. Chadwick’s influential sanitary report of 1842 divided people into ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’ parties and some people believed Chadwick wanted the poor to be made clean against their will Government attitudes also played a role. It was commonly thought that the laissez-faire system, in which governments didn’t interfere in the lives of adult men, was the only reasonable system, and it was only late in the process that government became willing to undertake reform and humanitarian action. The prime motivation then was cholera, not ideology. The Municipal Corporations Act of 1835 In 1835 a commission was appointed to look into municipal government.  It was badly organized, but the report published was deeply critical of what it called ‘chartered hogsties.’ A law with limited effect was passed, but newly created councils were given few powers and were expensive to form. Nevertheless, this wasnt a failure, as it set the pattern for the English government and made possible the later public health acts. Beginnings of the Sanitary Reform Movement A group of doctors wrote two reports in 1838 on the living conditions in London’s Bethnal Green. They drew attention to the connection between unsanitary conditions, disease, and pauperism. The Bishop of London then called for a national survey. Chadwick, a force in all things public service in the mid-eighteenth century, mobilized the medical officers provided by the Poor Law and created his 1842 report which highlighted the problems associated with class and residence. It was damning and sold a huge number of copies. Amongst its recommendations were an arterial system for clean water and the replacement of improvement commissions by a single body with power.  Many objected to Chadwick and some wags in the government claimed they preferred cholera to him. As a result of Chadwick’s report, though, the Health of Towns Association was formed in 1844, and branches all over England researched and published on their local conditions. Meanwhile, the government was recommended to introduce public health reforms by other sources in 1847. By this stage, some municipal governments had acted on their own initiative and passed private acts of Parliament to force through changes. Cholera Highlights the Need A cholera epidemic left India in 1817 and reached Sunderland in late 1831; London was affected by February 1832. Fifty percent of all cases proved fatal. Some towns set up quarantine boards, and they promoted whitewashing (cleaning clothing with chloride of lime) and speedy burials, but they were targeting disease under the miasma theory that disease was caused by floating vapors rather than the unrecognized infectious bacterium. Several leading surgeons recognized that cholera prevailed where sanitation and drainage were poor, but their ideas for improvement were temporarily ignored. In 1848 cholera returned to Britain, and the government resolved that something had to be done. The Public Health Act of 1848 The first Public Health act was passed in 1848 based on the recommendations of a Royal Commission. The act created a central Board of Health with a five-year mandate, to be considered for renewal at the end of that period. Three commissioners, including Chadwick, and a medical officer were appointed to the board. Wherever the death rate was worse than 23/1000, or where 10% of ratepayers requested assistance, the board would send an inspector to  authorize the town council to carry out duties and form a local board. These authorities would have powers over drainage, building regulations, water supplies,  paving, and rubbish. Inspections were to be carried out, and loans could be given. Chadwick took the opportunity to push his new interest in sewer technology to the local authorities. The act did not have much potency, because while it had the power to appoint boards and inspectors, that wasnt required, and local works were frequently held up by legal and financial obstacles. It was, however, much cheaper to set up a board than previously, with a local one costing just  £100. Some towns ignored the national board and set up their own private committees to avoid central interference. The central board worked hard, and between 1840 and 1855 they posted a hundred thousand letters, although it lost much of its teeth when Chadwick was forced from office and a switch to annual renewal was made. Overall, the act is considered to have failed as the death rate remained the same, and the problems remained, but it did establish a precedent for government intervention. Public Health after 1854 The central board was disbanded in 1854. By the mid-1860s, the government had come to a more positive and interventionist approach, spurred on by the 1866 cholera epidemic that clearly revealed the flaws in the earlier act. A set of innovations aided the progress, as in 1854 English physician John Snow showed how cholera could be spread by a water pump, and in 1865 Louis Pasteur demonstrated his germ theory of disease. The ability to vote was expanded to the urban working class in 1867, and politicians now had to make promises regarding public health to gain votes. Local authorities also began to take more of a lead. The 1866 Sanitary Act forced towns to appoint inspectors to check that water supplies and drainage were adequate. The 1871 Local Government Board Act placed public health and the poor law in the hands of empowered local governmental bodies and came about because of an 1869 Royal Sanitary Commission which recommended strong local government. 1875 Public Health Act In 1872 there was a Public Health Act, which split the country into sanitary areas, each of which had a medical officer. In 1875 Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli saw that several acts aimed at social improvements were passed, such as a new Public Health Act and an Artisan’s Dwellings Act. A Food and Drink Act was passed to attempt to improve diet. This set of public health acts rationalized previous legislation and was extremely influential. Local authorities were made responsible for a range of public health issues and given the powers to enforce decisions, including sewage, water, drains, waste disposal, public works, and lighting. These acts marked the beginning of a genuine, workable public health strategy, with responsibility shared between the local and national government, and the death rate finally began to fall. Further improvements were boosted by scientific discoveries. Koch discovered micro-organisms and separated out germs, including tuberculosis in 1882 and cholera in 1883. Vaccines were developed. Public health can still be a problem, but the changes in the role of government established in this period, both perceived and actual, are mostly ingrained into the modern consciousness and provide a working strategy to ameliorate problems as they arise.

In addition, about 700 missing people were not included in the death count. Hundreds of thousands of local residents were left homeless and unemployed. It was the most expensive hurricane in U.S history, with physical damages worth about seventy-five billion dollars. This estimate does not include the damages to the economy caused by a disruption in oil supply and export of commodities as well as disruption to the sugar and tourism industry in the affected states. â€Å"It is estimation that the total economical effect in Louisiana and Mississippi may exceed $150 billion† (Burton & Hicks, 2005). The destruction caused by such a large hurricane is inevitable. It resulted in an impact on a region of approximately 90,000 squ are miles (DHS, 2008). However, the amount of damage caused could have been reduced had there been proper preparations for such a natural disaster. The biggest tragedy occurred in New Orleans due to the failure of the levee system. This resulted in heavy flooding and as much as 80% of the city became submerged under water (DHS, 2008). Experts indicated that this failure was due to design flaws in the system along with inadequate maintenance. The blame for the failure of the levee system was assigned to â€Å"the US Army Corps of Engineers  (USACE), the designers and builders of the levee system† (U.S. House of Representatives, 2006), and a lawsuit was filed against them for failing to pay sufficient attention to public safety. In addition, certain flood gates were not closed, this carelessness resulted in further flooding. Beachfront towns suffered worse property damage where 90% of the residential areas were flooded due to lack of proper preventative methods (DHS, 2008). The main entities that I have taken into account are the ordering up to date stock, up to date problem solves, History of problems and suppliers. The new system will enhance the Hotel ability to provide more efficient services for their day to day work. This consumes a vast amount of time and still there is a question of accuracy. Suppliers who send the parts and maintenance components are not computerized therefore it is very difficult to order and problems record or to update a certain record. Backup data involves an enormous amount of paper work, which in turn results in inefficiency. I have chosen a well-known hotel as our Global Grange Hotel. I visited the Grange hotel several times in order to gain a through understanding on how it managed and how work is being carried out within the current maintenance system. A huge amount work is done manually. In this hotel have a problem with storage space according to maintenance department has to verify a special area to maintain their backup and other data. Including more paper works and documents such as agreements, purchase orders etc. This is very inconvenient for the management of the hotel maintenance department. In the system that i developed there will be no manual transactions. Every single detail is computerized. Therefore it would be a highly efficient, well maintained and the operations would be fast and reliable. It would minimize all the drawbacks of the current semi computerized system. There are many details that we should be concerned with when we develop a computerized system, such as the amount of computers and peripheral equipment needed for the new system, the employees who need to be trained to work within a computerized environment and all other traits needed to manipulate an organization to give out its best. INVESTIGATE PHASE The investigation phase is also known as the fact-finding stage or the analysis of the current system. This is a detailed study conducted with the purpose of wanting to fully understand the existing system and to identify the basic information requirements. In my investigation, analyse of the current system, fully understand the existing manual system and basic information requirements. Investigate the current system Ill visit to the grange hotel and Speak to head of maintenance, maintenance staff, people who order spare parts and ask what they required. HOW IT WORKS For the maintenance management system, following key elements must be included. In Stock management maintenance staff needs to know up to date stock, suppliers details, add suppliers, update schedules and problem history. I found main problems in the global grange hotel and I describe in below. Problem Status Currently hotel maintenance staffs are doing in manually. Normally they put a docket with the description of the problem and maintenance department has to check every time what are the problem need to be attended and resolved. Once the maintenance personal completed a relevant job, he will be informed to the department which raised the problem. Stock Management In the maintenance department have to check their stock every week and order them self. Some times they fail to find the part or the supplier who sell the product. Update schedule Update schedule is the other problem for maintenance. They have to archive some tasks. Some are every month and some are yearly. Most of the time they forget to do those goals. Problem history Mostly in head of maintenance wants to know the problem history. Eg: Room 111 had an Air condition problem. They have to verify the history of each unit was. Then maintenance can do the proper solution for that. The Global Grange hotel maintenance system is currently handling their daily operations manually. There is a high rate of bureaucracy within the organization. The hotel is presently handling the maintenance records manually therefore the problems currently faced by the hotel are as follows à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ The amount of paperback involved is high. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ The turnaround time for obtaining information to make decisions is highly time consuming. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Lack of efficiency. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Error rate is high in a manually functioning organization. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ The tendency to lose important documents is high. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ No backup data in a manual system, even if the organization keeps backup data records there will be a problem of space and data redundancy. 1.1.1.4 SYSTEM HISTORY In my research i found history of hotel maintenance systems which using for maintaining their current systems. Including key elements and basics functions. What is the CMMS? The Basics Maintenance Management software includes basic functionality such as: automating work orders scheduling preventive maintenance controlling parts inventories creating purchase orders easily accessing needed reports Contract management, simplified work orders, and easy admin options for web requests and handhelds are also included. Many customers also use specific features for setting automatic alerts, and viewing maintenance histories. Its also simple to memorize and recall standard tasks, and manage warranties, suppliers, and vendors. Developing these kind of systems front ends mostly they use web pages from html, xml and for the desk top application using visual basics, visual basics.net etc. For the back ends them using sql, my sql, oracle and access database. Technology for the maintenance management system, we have to use small network with the server and two three work stations. Install to the main server and workstations for the users. System database working with the server and its update every time. Using Visual basic.net for the inventory system, we can apply for system user interfaces. Also can create login, administrator and for the users. From this software can develop forms according to our system and its easy to use for the users. For the system back ends normally they use sql, my sql and ms access. If we use these software to back end, need to create our database according to requirements. It is a powerful personal database and data manipulation tool that is also widely used in many small businesses ( http://www.xcent.com/Glossary/Microsoft_Access) Conclusion Upon developing the proposed fully computerised maintenance system for Global Grange Hotel allows its maintenance personals to obtained the daily work scheduled which includes the fault and routine tasks, Maintenance supervisors and all relevant departments who log faults to track the status of faults and provide feedback or to escalate. Also Hotel management to monitor the ongoing maintenance issues and importantly the finance department can see the purchase requested and states of relevant payments to different suppliers. This will provide effective, reliable, efficient maintenance system which solved current ineffective, inefficient, highly time consuming, and complex procedures. Also implementing this system will dramatically reduce the usage of the paper work will give an opportunity to a step forward, towards Global Grange Hotels eco-friendly pledge.
